Role Description: Strike

Category: Production
Team: Build/Strike
Reports to: Strike Lead
Connected roles/teams: Rangers, MOOPsters

Purpose/Context:
Important note: anyone who signs up for the Strike role must be able to stay Sunday Aug 1st and possibly Monday Aug 2nd. Strike must be complete no later than Monday.

The Strike volunteers will work closely with the Strike Lead to make sure that the event site is left clean and tidy, that hired items and all organisation-specific items are packed and ready to be taken off site.

During Strike you will help take down and remove all traces of the event, and by informing campers and camps of leaving times, reminding everyone to take their own rubbish home, inform campers they have to do a final MOOP (matter out of place) sweep around their camping area. You will also check communal areas for cleanliness and support take-down of organisation’s own structures.

The role involves communication with freecampers, camps, artists and other members that brought personal or communal items or projects that have to be packed up and taken off the site according to the schedule. This part of the role requires some work and coordination with fellow Rangers and MOOPsters.

As a bonus, you will get the cosy camping on-site experience with other fortunate burner friends who also stayed for strike, for an additional night! – that is if there’s a need to stay until Monday. If all the strike work is done and complete on Sunday, there will be no need to stay (unless you really want to!)

Person Specifications:
– Able to stay on site until the end of strike: all day Sunday, and if necessary Monday. In that case, you’ll stay the night on site with the rest of the team and others that have to stay.
– Organised and reliable
– Not too shy to remind and motivate people to do something to a deadline after a week of our gathering’s fun; fun but firm, patient and a good sense of humour 🙂

Role and Responsibilities:
Pre-event:
– Make sure you join the discussion and stay informed on Discord by joining the Strike channel.
– Your lead will reach out with information regarding the role, schedule etc (on Discord).

Event/Strike:
Remember: The Strike team is the last one to leave, so the faster strike goes, the quicker you get home too 🙂 Recruit helpers to get things moving and if you kick everyone’s ass in a fun but firm way, you will win the strike game easily!

In general, Strike volunteers will be responsible for the following tasks:
– Show up in time to a Strike brief by the Strike lead. Teams should have a radio and wear high visibility vests so people know who is on call.
– Start making rounds in free camping, theme camps, art projects according to the Strike plan that’s been prepared in advance
– Be generally helpful when approached by members with possible questions about transport, rubbish and recycling, delays, ride shares etc.
– Communicate with members and camps regarding how and when to leave the site (strike/exodus plan), to take their MOOP off site, hurry people up if necessary, inform of parking/pick-up logistics etc.
– Help manage the pickup points and logistics for both private vehicles, production van and theme camp vans; certain paths and roads cannot be blocked
– Check communal areas for cleanliness
– Support take-down of organisation’s own structures (production office etc)

Free Campers Area / Theme Camps / Art Projects
Morning of strike day:
– Do a wake up round to remind campers/camps/art projects responsibles of leaving times (or get helpers to do this for you).  Remind everyone to take their own rubbish home; get campers to help each other (‘ask your neighbour if you don’t have any rubbish bags’ etc.)
– Remind all campers/camps/art projects responsibles they must do a final MOOP sweep around their areas before leaving the site
– Suggest to campers to pack all belongings first, then take them to the pick up point.
– Remind everyone of the communal effort; to pick up any rubbish they see anywhere on the site.
– Logistics and transport needs: help with getting vehicles on and off site
Later on strike day:
– Do another round to check how people are getting on. If necessary, hurry them up in a fun but firm way!

Event Production Strike:
– Support take-down and packing of organisation’s own structures (production office etc)
Check communal areas for cleanliness

Post-event:
– There may be a debrief or questionnaire from the Strike lead for you to give feedback.
– You are encouraged and welcome to give feedback to your lead or the organisation.

Time Commitment:
Pre-event: About 1 hr to communicate with the Strike lead and other team members regarding Strike timeline, plan and possibly your strike responsibility.
During event: Full day Sunday, possibly Monday as well. during strike time until the site is clear. Make sure you can stay on site until Monday (that is in case the strike is not complete by the end of day Sunday).
Post-event: Potentially a small amount of time to fill in a questionnaire or have a debrief with the Strike Lead.
